Beating the Heat – Eating in Summer

The weather outside is Frightful!  Today (Friday) it will ONLY be in the low 90s, up from the low 70s earlier this week. Tomorrow will be than mid-90s and Sunday will be a mere 105. Monday is the hottest day at 107 and then it will SLOWLY go back down to the low 90s.

So what to do?

Changing what we eat is job one. No more heavy, warm meals – this weekend will be all about the light, vegetable based meals. We’ll still enjoy our teas and tisanes (herbal teas) although a greater number of them will be cooled to room temperature. And if we spend any time outside we’ll be sure to add a good electrolyte replacement. Our favourite is adding coconut water to whatever else we’re drinking, about half and half. Since I brew my tea super dark, I can dilute with coconut water and not even notice. Hubs like to put it into juice.

To start the weekend off right I broke out the Vitamix and made a yummy breakfast smoothie:

Kefir Breakfast Smoothie

Refreshing and satisfying, it’s Blueberry kefir, peanut butter, mixed berries, chia seeds and protein powder. The 16 oz canning jar ensures portion control.

What are your favourite summer soothers?

Recipe:

  • 8 oz blueberry kefir
  • 2 tsp peanut butter (or other nut butter)
  • 1/2C frozen mixed berries
  • 2 Tbsp Chia seeds
  • 2 scoops vanilla protein powder
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice

Mix until smooth.

I like using the Vitamix because I can blend it for a bit to bring it up to a more body-friendly temperature, or if I walk away and forget I can turn it into sweet soup – oops!

Update:

Got this post written but not quite up on Friday, when the temps really DIDN’T soar too much. Today is Saturday, it’s just noon and BAM suddenly 99F with no clouds. Salads, smoothies and fruit are in our immediate future, interspersed with Indian, Thai and Middle Eastern foods – all of which come from regions with hot weather and all of which offer foods that help regulate the body.
